Project X: Welcome to California

When Alexx arrived at California Pacific Medical Center, it didn’t long for her to get directions to where to meet Dr. Elizabeth Wilson—the head of Pediatrics. From there, it took exactly one elevator ride and three floors up, until her heels were clicking on peppered tile.

Through the glass doors in front of her, there was a gift shop filled with an assortment of baby things in the window.  Down the hall and around the corner, led her to a waiting room filled with children, mothers, fathers and grandparents.

“Hi, how can I help you?” The receptionist inquired as Alexx approached the desk. The woman was probably in her mid forties; had dirty blond hair that bounced every time she moved around.

“Yes—my name is Dr. Alexx Craig. I’m supposed to have a meeting with Dr. Elizabeth Wilson at noon.”

“Ah, yes. Dr. Wilson is expecting you.” The receptionist pushed back from the desk, her nametag caught Alexx’s attention as she reached over and picked up the phone. The name was one that she had never seen before. Quera. How do you even pronounce that? Just as she was about to ask, the other line was picked up. “Dr. Wilson . . . I assume you’re expecting a Dr. Craig?” Another pause. “Okay, I will tell her.” Hanging up the phone, Quera offered her a smile. “Dr. Wilson will be right out.”

“Okay, thanks.” Nodding, Alexx stepped over to the side of the desk, so the next person in line could step forward. She let her thoughts take over slightly, until she heard the door open next to her. She recognized those hazel eyes, black hair, and cheery face from anywhere—Dr. Wilson.

“Dr. Craig . . . it’s so nice to see you again. I take it your trip down here was an eventful one?”

“Yes, very eventful.”  Alexx quipped with a laugh, shaking her hand in greeting.

Dr. Wilson laughed quietly. “I have to say that I was a little surprised you agreed to begin working so quickly after moving here. You’ve been here for what, a couple days now? Did I get that right?”

“Yes. I had planned on moving here a week sooner, but I stayed a little longer to finish getting my replacement situated and couldn’t get the movers scheduled until then, so I guess everything worked out. At least then I could get here when all my belongings did.”

Dr. Wilson gave her a pleasing smile, and then clapped her hands together. ”Well, I’m glad that you made it here all in one piece. How about a tour?” They entered the office, and Dr. Wilson explaining everything more in-depth than last time when she came in for her interview. She introduced Alexx to the receptionists and doctors again, showed her the setup of the examination rooms, where her office would be and explained a little bit of how protocol worked in the office—anywhere from paper work to patient charts—then to visit the General Pediatric Surgery floor.

After all questions were answered, they stopped in the waiting room. “Sorry to rush you, but I actually have an appointment scheduled in five minutes.” Giving her an apologetic glance, Dr. Wilson headed towards the elevators.

“Nope, you’re fine. That’s all the questions that I have for now.” Alexx concluded. “I will see you tomorrow morning then.”

“Eight A.M.” Dr. Wilson reminded her, pushing the down button on the elevator. “Hey, and I know that most everything is still in boxes, but feel free to bring some things to decorate those white walls in your office.” As Dr. Wilson winked, the metal doors opened. “See you tomorrow.”
