Project X: Food For Thought

“This place has changed a lot since I was a kid.” Alexx mused, driving her cart around the store. The first aisle she came upon was the grain section. The shelves on the left side:  held many selections of colorful cereals that would have made any child’s eyes widen with excitement. On the right, there were quite a few selections of breads to choose from that she browsed through. As she did; a father, his teenage daughter and two young children were seated in the cart—passed by.

Alexx eyed them curiously. The two younger children were harmonizing their own song together. They couldn’t have been more than two. However, the father and teenager didn’t seem to mind their song and were busily debating which cereal was better. Getting back to her own shopping, Alexx was about to move on when she realized she hadn’t yet put her bread in the cart. She turned back, hastily made a decision and went on.

When she looked back at the teenage girl, she was leaning against the cart; her brown eyes looked quizzically at Alexx. Her father on the other hand was frowning at his daughter as he placed two boxes of cereal boxes into the cart.

“Can we go now?” The teenager was tapping her foot on the floor, while clutching one hand on her stomach as if she were in pain or hungry.

“No . . . we still have some things to get for the barbeque on Saturday.” His voice was firm, as he overlooked the real intent of his daughter’s impatience.

“Why are we doing this anyway?”

“Because we like our neighbors—that’s why.” He turned to push the cart down the aisle. “Now, we still need some pickles, mustard, buns and some soda.”

“Not everyone does.” The teenager mumbled, dragging herself behind as they soon disappeared around the corner.
